What to Say When People Ask..."What Do You Do?"
By Hilton Johnson, The MLMCoach
I received this question from "Robert."
(Special note to Robert: If you want to learn how
to give good introductions, Robert, you might start
by providing your last name too!)
Okay, now that I got that out of the way...
When someone asks what kind of work you do or
something to that effect, there is only one phrase
you have to remember to get attention:
"What I do is..."
Then all you have to do is add a benefit or two
without sounding pushy.
There are two types of introductions you want to
know how to do well. One that sells your products
and one that helps you recruit people. Let's work
on the product one first.
If you want to sell more products, your introduction
could sound like this:
"What I do is...help people lose weight without going
on diets."
"What I do is...help people eliminate aches and
pains by using magnetic and infrared products."
"What I do is...show people how to save lots of
money when they need an attorney."
"What I do is...help people reduce stress, have
more energy and improve their health by taking all
natural nutritional supplements."
Get the idea?
You can use the same language formula for recruiting
people:
"What I do is...help people go in business for
themselves and work out of their homes."
"What I do is...show people how to fire their bosses
and start their own home-based business."
"What I do is...help people create multiple streams
of income by leveraging their talents, abilities
and their time."
"What I do is...show people how to become financially
independent by partnering with me in the health and
wellness industry."
Pretty easy huh?
If the person you're speaking with is attracted to
the benefits you mentioned, and if you didn't scare
him or her away by overdoing it, you'll get a response
that clearly tells you s/he's interested.
The next step would be to give him or her a presentation.
If you want to know what kind of presentation to give,

The language formula I just outlined for you is an easy
and generic way for you to get started giving good
introductions that attract ideal prospects.
However, the coolest introductions we coach on at
MLMU are ones that are customized to the individual.
They all contain three key elements:
1. A dramatic benefit
2. An element of curiosity
3. A word picture that describes the "moment" of the benefit
Here's an example of a customized introduction we
created for a distributor who markets air purification
systems:
Prospect: "What do you do?"
Distributor: "What I do is...help people to walk into
their homes and offices and immediately notice that the
air they're breathing is cleaner and fresher than ever
before and free of unhealthy toxins."
Any person who is concerned about the air they breathe
is bound to respond favorably to this introduction.
And when they do, a qualified prospect has been created
out of thin air! (No pun intended)
Special Note: If you would like to have your own customized
introduction, I can have one of my coaches call you and create
it for you. It won't cost you anything ...
